Two more arrested over microchip heist

GEORGE TOWN: Police have arrested two more people over the recent microchip heist in Bayan Lepas here.

Penang deputy police chief Deputy Comm Datuk A. Thaiveegan said the two, in their 30s and 40s, were picked up in Ipoh on Sunday. They have been remanded a week.

“We are still tracing the mastermind,” he said yesterday.

He added that the missing microchips were, however, not in the suspects’ possession.

It was reported that a lorry with 22 boxes of microchips worth some RM1.5mil was stolen when the driver went into the office to collect some documents at about 9.30pm on Friday.

The lorry was later found some 1.5km away with 12 of the 22 boxes of microchips missing.

The lorry driver in his 40s has also been remanded for investigation.

There have been several such thefts reported in the state previously.

In October, thieves carted away RM80,640 worth of microchips from a factory in Bayan Lepas. Six security guards were arrested.

In October last year, a multinational company in Prai Industrial Area was robbed of RM22mil worth of microchips.

It is learnt that most of the microchips were eventually smuggled to Hong Kong.
