Highway users should bear the cost of building them, says Najib

KUALA LUMPUR: Building new highways cost billions of ringgit and someone has to pay for them, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“If we impose taxes everyone has to pay, but now only those who use the highway have to pay toll,” he said, while opening MCA’s 60th annual general meeting.

Najib said when the project was handed to the private sector, they had to borrow the money and the concessionaires need to repay the loan by imposing toll.

“If the public waits for Government allocation to build a highway, it could take years. We have to build schools, ports, hospitals, airports and provide many other services.”

He reiterated that the Government was considering measures to mitigate the cost for regular highway users by including discounts.

He also said the Government would ensure the profits of the concessionaires were not excessive.

He lashed out at opposition parties for criticising his administration when they also did the same.

He used Selangor’s move to raise the salaries of its lawmakers by between 200% and 300% as an example.
