Mas Ermiyati: Any toll rates hike should be done in stages

PETALING JAYA: The proposed increase in toll rates should be carried out in stages so that the people can adapt to the high cost of living, says Puteri Umno chief Mas Ermiyati Samsudin.

She said that the Government should also consult the people first before making any decision that could affect them.

“Any agreement made between the Government and highway concessionaires must be brought to the public for consultation first and the agreement must be monitored,” she said on the proposed toll hike, which is speculated to be between 50sen and RM2.

The proposed hike, which is expected to come into force in January, will affect 15 highways nationwide.

Mas Ermiyati, who is also Masjid Tanah MP, said that the Govern-ment should introduce anti-trust laws or competitive laws to manage and control big corporations and highway concessionaires so that public interest would not be ignored.

“Corporations and concessionaires should not look into making huge profits without thinking of their implications towards the public,” she added.

She also said green technology should be promoted in the public transportation system.

Tenaga Nasional Berhad can also review its electricity tariff, especially during night time, and find a suitable mechanism as an alternative to help reduce the costs of public transportation, she added.
