Forever remembered: Azean’s husband sprinkling rose petals on her grave at the Bukit Kiara Muslim cemetery.
PETALING JAYA: When she was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer in 2007, doctors only gave actress Azean Irdawaty two more years to live.
They told her that she must be prepared for the worst as she could not possibly fight against the terminal disease, which had reached a critical level.
However, through sheer courage and fighting spirit, Azean surpassed the two-year “deadline”.
“Why should we always think about dying when we have breast cancer? We must stay positive and remain cheerful.
“One way to fight cancer is to always laugh,” she said in an interview before she died.
Azean, whose full name was Azean Irdawaty Yusoff, 63, died at the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre on Tuesday. She was buried at the Bukit Kiara Muslim cemetery yesterday.
Despite successfully undergoing surgery to remove her cancer, Azean, who undertook chemotherapy treatments, also suffered from other health problems.
She was hospitalised several times, which cost her hundreds of thousands of ringgit in treatment costs, while having to spend about RM2,000 each month to pay rent.
Swallowing her pride, Azean had to rely on donations from the public and entertainment associations.
Earlier, Azean’s body was transported from her house in Bandar Utama to the Kaya Ara mosque in Damansara, where the solat jenazah (prayer for the departed) was performed at noon.
Among the artistes present at the funeral were Fatimah Abu Bakar, Othman Hafsham, Zulkifli Zain, Melissa Saila and Norlia Ghani.
Azean leaves husband Khairil Anwar Zainal Mukhtar Rashidi, 63, and three children Benjy, Elza Irdalynna and Inessa Irdayanty.
