Close shave for man and daughter

KUALA TERENGGANU: A senior citizen and his daughter almost died when the van they were in suddenly caught fire at the Sultan Mahmud Bridge here.

The incident occurred at about 2.30pm yesterday when the victim Yahya Awang, 62, was on his way to deliver dates to his brother’s family in Losong near here.

He said a fellow road user informed him that there was a fire under his vehicle as they approached the scene of the incident.

“Shocked, I stopped the vehicle on the left side of the road before seeing the fire blazing around the footrest.

“I immediately ordered my daughter sitting next to me to get out of the van as I was worried it might explode,” he said when met at the scene.

Yahya said he managed to salvage the dates which he had brought back from Mecca last month, and was thankful nothing worse happened to him and his daughter. — Bernama
