KLANG: It was a bittersweet moment for the parents of terminally ill 17-year-old Lee Woei Kang who finally got to meet his idols - the Transformers.

Computer technician Lee Soon Seng, 46, said he and his wife Goh Gaik Wah were exhilarated to see the happiness in their son’s eyes but knowing that they might be losing him soon broke their hearts.

“We are happy to see Woei Kang’s excitement. At the same time, we are frightened of what awaits us,” said Lee, who lives in Taman Desawan near here with his wife and four children.

Woei Kang, who has Down Syndrome, is suffering from end-stage leukemia and doctors have informed his parents in August that he has only three to six months to live.

His meeting with Transformers - which, in the movies, helped save Earth from the evil Decepticons - was arranged by the Children’s Wish Society of Malaysia.

Lee said the family had tried to give whatever Woei Kang wanted or liked.

“He likes singing so we take him for karaoke sessions. We go out shopping and to the movies every week because he enjoys such activities,” he said, adding that Woei Kang would always ask for Transformer toys each time.

The couple’s other children, Pei Khee, 20, Woei Yi,12, and Woei Quan, 8, were also there for the meeting with the superheroes at Centro Mall here yesterday.

When he caught sight of both Bumble Bee and Optimus Prime - the leader of the Transformers -, Woei Kang clapped with glee before rushing onstage to grab their hands and pose for photographs.

Asked how he was feeling, the boy, who attend special class at SMK Kampong Jawa, replied: “Happy”.

Lee said although Woei Kang knows that he is sick, he does not understand the gravity of his own illness.

“We just hope that we will have a longer time with him and try to give him whatever he wants until the inevitable happens,” said Lee.

The society strives to fulfil wishes of children stricken with life-limiting or terminal illness around the country.
