PETALING JAYA: Seasoned party-goers say year-end parties can get out of control with fights, thefts and drugging incidents.

“During the festive season, especially New Year’s Eve, I think people tend to be more carefree when it comes to drinking because they just want to celebrate. And some people who drink more tend to be violent,” said audit associate Vivian Toh, 23, who witnessed a fight at a club two years ago.

Another party-goer, merchandiser Elysha Lee, 23, had the experience of having her drink spiked during a New Year’s celebration at a club.

She was with some friends and their extended group of colleagues and shared a few jugs of beer.

“Usually I don’t accept any drinks from strangers but seeing my friends drink, I thought one glass would be fine. After downing that, everything felt and looked strange. I was very sure that the amount of alcohol I drank wasn’t enough to make me drunk,” said Lee.

Writer Samantha Chow, 23, said the most important thing when going to parties was to have a group of friends and to always have an “exit strategy”.

“There must be someone who’s not drinking so he or she can take care of everyone else and be the driver.

“But in case something happens, always have a back-up plan for transport,” said Chow.

Promotions executive Yee Pei Wen, 23, advised party-goers to watch what they drink and not leave the drinks unattended – even with bartenders.
