Office boy Shanmugan Nathan, 31 allegedly drank bleach, painkillers and antibiotics after a fight with his wife on Tuesday.

KUALA LUMPUR: A 31-year-old office boy died after drinking a cocktail of bleach, antibiotics and painkillers after his wife threatened to take his child away from him, claims his family.

Shanmugan Nathan and his wife Simali Vanitha, 26 allegedly had a heated argument while attending Simali’s uncle’s funeral in Jalan Air Panas, Setapak on Tuesday afternoon.

Simali allegedly decided to leave her husband and also took their one and a half month old daughter with her.

Family members claimed she went to her parents home in Puchong after the fight.

“His younger brother got a call from him in the evening saying that he had drank some bleach and his medicine.

“He said he wasn’t feeling well and needed someone to take him to the hospital.

“I don’t know why he did that. Maybe he was overcome with anger and wasn’t thinking properly,” said a family member on Wednesday who identified herself as Maha.

Shanmugan was brought to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital where he later died at around 10pm.

At the mortuary, Simali was distraught but claimed her in-laws had concocted the story to pin the blame on her.

“I didn’t leave him and we didn’t fight. We always argue but we make up and love each other a lot. I don’t know why he would do such a thing!

“These last few days, Shanmugan had been going out and drinking with his brothers and would come home drunk,” she said.

Simali claimed that Shanmugan was given the prescription of painkillers and antibiotics after he suffered a gash and fractured toe on his left leg, after a fight with her two-weeks ago.

“But he never took the medicine. He said he didn’t like the taste. So I don’t know what would have made him drink all of it at once,” she claimed.

Meanwhile, emotions ran high at the mortuary with Shanmugan and Simali’s family arguing over the facts of the case and where Shanmugan would be buried.

Police officers had to be called in to defuse the situation, while the case is being investigated as a sudden death.
