Catering to the Mas-ses

ONLINE EXCLUSIVE: PETALING JAYA: After winning the Puteri Umno chief's post last October, Mas Ermieyati Samsudin has set her sights on catering to the needs of young Malay and Bumiputera women.

"Our uppermost priority is to be the voice of the young. We want to represent them, fight for them and voice out issues concerning them and their causes to the Umno leadership and the Government.

"Puteri Umno leaders and members must be sensitive and aware of what is going down on the ground," she said.

"There should not be any barrier between Umno leaders, especially from Puteri and the masses - we should be part of them.

"Like the flood situation in certain states now, some Umno delegates have opted to go back to their respective places instead of attending our general assembly. We want to go and provide assistance in whatever form that we can to help the people. That is our priority.

"More programmes should involve the masses and meet their needs.  This is a form of re-energising Umno to make it relevant to the masses."

In the Oct 14 Umno elections, Mas Ermieyati defeated Jamilah Hanim Othman in a straight fight for the Puteri Umno chief post.

Mas Ermieyati, who is also the MP for Masjid Tanah in Malacca, has been a member of Puteri Umno since its founding  days.

"Puteri Umno is a part of me, from then until now. Having served in different capacities previously, I have seen Puteri Umno slowly transforming from its pioneer days in 2001 to a strengthened movement which it is today," said the 37-year-old lawyer.

She is fully aware of the heavy responsibilities that comes with her job and has to deliver to help Umno to remain a force in Malaysian politics.

"I am willing to shoulder it because I believe that Puteri Umno is the best option for young girls. Puteri Umno will deliver what is expected from us.

"Being in Umno and the Federal government, we are in the best position to champion this. Puteri Umno members must be close to the people, too. They must listen to the people and also explain to them the various issues concerning the party and the Government," she said.

She said by doing this, they can counter the allegations and lies spread by the Opposition meant at confusing the people.

She also dispelled the notion that Puteri Umno is just a small voice in the party, stating that they have two representatives in Umno's highest decision-making body, the supreme council.

"Of course, there are some negative perceptions about us but we will go all out to change this. I believe that our work in the months to come will be a reflection of the strong voice that we have in decision-making within the Umno leadership.

"It is not the number of people but how vocal we are in championing issues. Puteri Umno must be daring to confront issues and take the bull by the horns.

"When we come forward to express our voices in the right platform, I am sure the party leadership will take note of it," she said.

She also added that the Government has initiated various transformation and programmes for the youth and this is based on some of their input.

"Party president Datuk Seri Najib Razak, in his closed-door briefing to delegates on Tuesday (Dec 3), stressed the need for Puteri Umno to get to the young voters.

"This shows that the president himself believes that we have a voice and he listens to Puteri Umno's views," said Mas Ermieyati.

She concluded by saying, "I would like to see a vibrant Puteri Umno. A wing that caters to the people. When young girls talk to us, they should know that we are there for them, we represent them and we are ever willing to champion their issues.

"I believe this can be achieved with the support from all quarters. This is what I hope to achieve," she said.
