Durian juice a hit at street food fest

KUALA LUMPUR: Durians are usually enjoyed fresh or made into products like tempoyak (fermented durian spread) but visitors to the Street Food Festival here found out that there’s still more to the King of Fruits.

Mohd Noor Mamat, 53, caught the eye of many with his durian juice – a delightful concoction of kampung durian paste, ice water and a dash of syrup.

“I took 16 years to perfect the recipe and everywhere I sell the drink, customers are pleasantly surprised,” he said at the festival launch in Little India, Brickfields, on Saturday.

Besides carnivals and festivals, he also sells his concoction at pasar malam in Semenyih.

The Little India sidewalk was transformed into a street food haven over the weekend as hawkers served up a storm of local delights.

The three-day Street Food Festival 2013, which ended yesterday, was held simultaneously at 18 locations nationwide, with at least 15,000 hawker stalls set up.

Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said the festival, themed “Taste of Unity”, was relevant as Malaysians were “united by local food”.

“The three main dishes promoted for this festival are nasi goreng, sup tulang and popiah,” he said in a speech read by ministry secretary-general Dr Ong Hong Peng.
