KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak defended his wife whom he said had come under numerous criticisms despite having quietly contributed to the country’s interests on several occasions.
In his winding-up speech at the Umno assembly, the party president said he felt compelled to explain what Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor had done because of this.
He related an incident in which a Malaysian student was arrested by Egyptian authorities after being wrongly suspected of being a spy.
“I asked Rosmah to contact Suzanne Mubarak, the wife of the then president of Egypt Hosni Mubarak, to help in getting the student out of jail,” he said. “The student was freed two hours after her call,” he added.
Najib also related another incident when Malaysian authorities were evacuating students in Egypt following the overthrow of Mubarak.
“We could not secure enough flights to ferry our students home, so we had to ask the Saudi Arabian government to allow our aircraft to land in Jeddah without the students having to apply for a visa,” he said.
“It was a difficult request as the Saudis are very strict when it comes to visas. However, because of my wife’s networking with the Saudi royal family, their government not only allowed this but also provided two 747 jets to fly them home free of charge.”
