Five-point plan for next GE

KUALA LUMPUR: The 14th general election may be more than four years away, but Umno is already drawing up a comprehensive five-point action plan to prepare for it.

The plan is consistent with Umno’s transformation programme which the leadership regards as essential to fulfilling the expectations of the people while holding fast to the core principles of the party, president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.

The five points in the plan are:

> Defending the interests of Islam;

> Strengthening the economy of the Malays and other bumiputras who represent two-thirds of the population;

> The introduction of Key Perfor-mance Indicators (KPI) in all divisions and states to ensure the party machinery moves effectively in GE14;

> Mastering information and communication technology, especially the use of the Internet; and

> The rolling out of a cadreship programme to identify and train future leaders of the party to ensure continuity.

“Through the KPIs we will be better prepared to win the state and parliamentary seats which we lost in the last election.

“This is apart from strengthening our positions in the areas we won,” Najib said in his policy speech at the Umno general assembly.

On the use of the Internet, he told party members that they must be ICT-competent to win the hearts and minds of the voters and also to counter the lies and slander spread by the Opposition.

“Clearly, Umno is not out of date and is not afraid to meet any challenge while remaining committed to change for the better,” he added.

Stressing the need to begin preparing for GE14 which must be held by mid-2018, Najib said: “We have to prepare and strengthen our party. We regained Kedah and strengthened our hold on Perak, but much remains to be done.”

Najib said the leadership was committed to transformation as it was necessary for Umno to remain relevant and spearhead the country’s future direction.

Through its transformation process, Umno has continuously presented the people with various successes in developing the economy, Najib said.

“If this continues, insya Allah, we can emerge as a developed country much earlier than the projected 2020.

“This transformation must be embraced by all Umno members. They must be the agents of transformation who reflect the new way forward in the country’s politics,” Najib added.

He said that Umno’s transformation agenda would fail without the full support of the party’s 3.5 million members.
