KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and other government-linked companies (GLCs) should not to be driven by financial performance alone, Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said.
Instead, they must never forget their responsibilities to the rakyat, he said during his policy speech at the Umno Youth general assembly here Wednesday.
"For Umno Youth, the rise in tariffs which are not in line with the increase of fuel prices only serves to profit TNB, which is more concerned with its shareholders and not the rakyat," he said to applause.
TNB recently announced a 15% increase in the electricity tariff from next year.
Earlier in his speech, Khairy also reminded his colleagues in the party who won in the recent polls not to forget the others.
"Now that you have won, it does not mean that you should stop answering phone calls or messages on your Whatsapp and BBM," he said.
Khairy also slammed the Selangor state government for raising the salaries of its assemblymen by a huge quantum.
"Surely that cannot also be for the sake of the rakyat?"
He said that if the speaker's salary was RM270,000 a year, the speaker would get RM9,000 for a day's work based on the 21 days of sitting for the state assembly last year.
He added that the ego and big talk of the opposition knew no bounds.
"The longer they have been in power, the more arrogant they have become. When things don't gel for the DAP, they do not hesitate to call civil servants or anyone for that matter 'dogs' or 'kucing kurap'.
"Even their subsequent apologies reek of insincerity," he said.
