Lost in flames: Yong surveying the damage to his home and car after the fire in Kota Baru.
KOTA BARU: Yong Chong Ngo thought only about saving his two pet dogs as he tried to dash into his home in Kampung Kubur Kuda after it caught fire here.
But the 48-year-old tow truck worker was too late – both his pets, Tong Hong and Oleng, perished in the fire on Saturday night.
Search and rescue personnel had prevented Yong from entering the wooden house, which was blazing by the time he arrived, thinking that he wanted to save his belongings.
“My wife and I were in Wakaf Baru not far away when I got a phone call that my house was on fire. I rushed home and thought of nothing else but my dogs. They were both in the house,” Yong said when met at the scene.
When the fire was put out, he tried to get inside the house again as he wanted to see the dogs’ remains but he was told not to.
“I was told by several firemen that they heard the dogs howling at the height of the fire as they were fighting to control the fire but after awhile, the sound died,” Yong said.
“I understand that I was prevented from entering my house for my own safety but it’s sad that my dogs died,” said Yong.
Yong’s car parked by his house was also scorched by the fire as he could not get to his car keys left in the house.
District fire department chief Zaini Bidin said the station received the emergency call at 10.03pm and arrived with four fire engines with 43 firemen seven minutes later.
“We managed to put out the fire in 10 minutes. We are still investigating the cause of fire,” Zaini added.
