KOTA KINABALU: PKR’s Kadamaian state assemblyman Jeremy Malajad @ Malazad has resigned from all posts in the party and declared himself an Independent.
He said he decided to leave PKR to ensure that his constituents would receive better benefits from the development programmes initiated by the Barisan Nasional-led Sabah government.
Announcing the move in the northern Kota Belud district, some 60km from the city, Jeremy said there was strong support for the Barisan from the people in the 60 state constituencies in Sabah.
“As a newly-elected representative, I must ensure that the people receive improved and positive changes, including the provision of basic amenities such as roads, water supply and rural clinics,” he said here yesterday in the presence of the 50 Kadamaian PKR members who also quit the party.
Jeremy, along with Matunggong assemblyman Jelani Hamdan, had been widely expected to quit the party as they were conspicuously absent from a meeting with party leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim here last weekend.
When contacted, Jelani said: “I have not reached that point as yet. However, I am not ruling out the possibility of leaving the party.”
Jelani said he did not attend the Sabah PKR liaison meeting with Anwar on Saturday as “there was no point in attending it”.
“We cannot work with Sabah PKR chief Datuk Seri Lajim Ukin anymore,” he added.
He said Anwar and Lajim had ignored repeated calls for
better representation from the Kadazandusun-Rungus communities in the state PKR liaison line-up.
He claimed that Lajim, as
Sabah PKR chief, had sidelined
the Kadazandusun and Rungus leaders.
Jelani also claimed that many PKR and DAP assemblymen were not in favour of Lajim becoming the state PKR chief.
Cracks had appeared in Sabah’s elected Opposition ranks in the State Assembly on Sept 27 when Luyang DAP representative Hiew King Cheu quit the party and declared himself an Independent.
In an immediate response, PKR vice-president Tian Chua said Jeremy’s resignation was an act of betrayal to the party.
He added that a show-cause letter would also be sent to Jelani.
