Bukit Bendera MP Zairil Khir Johari.
GEORGE TOWN: Bukit Bendera MP Zairil Khir Johari has lodged a police report claiming that his mobile phone number was hacked with messages sent out to unknown numbers.
After lodging the police report, Zairil, who is also newly elected DAP central executive committee (CEC) member, said he realised the problem while campaigning in Gurun, Kedah on Saturday evening.
“At about 7.45pm, I started to receive an influx of SMS and calls asking me who am I.
“It was only much later that someone showed me the SMS that I had “sent” out that I believed my mobile phone number has been hacked,” he said after lodging the police report at the Patani Road police station on Sunday.
The SMS that was sent from his number read: “Saya adalah Melayu. Dan saya mengharapkan sokongan tuan-tuan untuk mengetuai DAP Kedah” (I’m a Malay and I hope for your support to lead Kedah DAP).
Zairil said he was not sure how many of the SMS were sent out but he had received some 30 replies and calls from unknown numbers.
“I’m still receiving calls until today.
“I believe some unscrupulous individual(s) try to create problem for Pakatan as three PAS leaders, Kedah PAS commissioner Datuk Mahfuz Omar, Sungai Limau PAS election director Datuk Ir Amiruddin Hamzah and Pengkalan Kundor assemblyman Datuk Pharolrazi Mohd Zawawi also had similar problems last week,” he said.
