YAN: About 50,000 school buses nationwide are not registered with the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD), said its chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar.
To date, only 18,000 school buses are registered.
Syed Hamid said most school bus operators did not register with SPAD because they used old buses which did not meet specifications stipulated by the Commission.
"SPAD has no problems in issuing licences for school buses, as long as they can meet the stipulated conditions. "Anybody can apply as long as he is a Malaysian citizen, has no crime record and is not a bankrupt," he told reporters after handing over a school students insurance protection scheme at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Dulang here Saturday.
