KUALA LUMPUR: Effective today, all operations by the security firm whose rogue guard shot dead a bank’s operations officer in Subang Jaya during a robbery will be deemed illegal, says Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pic).
He said the firm would be hauled up in court if it persisted in continuing with its services.
“We have issued verbal and written notices to the firm’s clients not to use its services.
“Any service by the firm is deemed illegal,” he said at a press conference at the Parliament lobby yesterday.
It was reported that a security guard shot dead bank officer Norazita Abu Talib after she opened the strongroom of an Ambank branch in Subang Jaya on Oct 23.
The guard escaped with about RM450,000 from the vault.
Dr Ahmad Zahid said the weapons at the firm had been seized and its clients had been notified.
He said the ministry’s safety and public order department secretary checked the firm’s offices and branches to ensure that it had halted operations.
He also revealed that the firm had previously breached the ministry’s rules three times for hiring illegal immigrants as security guards, some of whom had criminal backgrounds.
However, it was business as usual at the security firm in Jalan Raja Chulan.
A staff member said as far as he knew, the company’s operating licence was not revoked and that security guards could still work as long as they did not carry firearms.
“There are 2,000 of us. How are we going to earn a living if they close the company down?”
Meanwhile, AmBank Group said it had terminated the services of the firm following the ministry’s move to revoke its licence.
AmBank Group senior general manager (group corporate, communications and marketing) Syed Anuar Syed Ali said: “Our priority is to ensure the safety of our staff and our customers.”
But, he said there could be some disruption to opening and closing hours or restricted services in a few locations.
“All our call centres and electronic banking services will remain operational as normal,” he said.
