PETALING JAYA: Cancer-stricken Ngeo Jia Yee has one thing she can look forward to, even though the 12-year-old has lost her vision.

She will get to go on a family trip to Hong Kong Disneyland.

“I cannot wait to meet Mickey Mouse,” said the enthusiastic Jia Yee. “He is my favourite Disney character.”

The plucky girl, who was struck with jaw bone cancer soon after surgery to remove her right eye due to eye cancer, has caught The Star’s attention last year with her determination to master the electronic keyboard despite her condition.

She has been impressing her audience, including the Prime Minister’s wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, with her mastery of tunes such as Auld Lang Syne.

Recently, Jia Yee was sent home under strict advice by the doctor so that she could spend quality time with her family after chemotherapy treatment could no longer help her.

Tan Kim Lan, 36, said her daughter was thrilled to learn that she would finally get to meet Mickey Mouse.

“It has always been one of her dreams. Right now, it is coming true for her,” she said, adding that she was grateful to the businessman who sponsored the trip.

Tan said Jia Yee’s doctor had given her daughter the green light for the trip, adding that keeping the girl’s spirits up was the “most important thing right now”.

“We are leaving on Nov 11,” she said, adding that she, along with Jia Yee and her 10-year-old brother, would be spending three days and two nights in Hong Kong.

Describing Jia Yee as a brave, supportive and optimistic girl, Tan said her daughter would always comfort her by saying: “It’s okay, mum. I will surely recover from this.”

Jia Yee, who was diagnosed with retinoblastoma – or eye cancer – when she was two, had her right eye removed before she started to lose the vision in her left eye. Last year, she was diagnosed with jaw bone cancer.
