GEORGE TOWN: Consumers in Penang will have to pay double the water conservation surcharge (WCS) for every 1,000 litres used, if they use more than 35,000 litres each month starting from Friday.
Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) Sdn Bhd said the WCS has been gazetted in accordance with the Water Services Industry Act 2006 and would take effect from Nov 1.
The surcharge is RM0.48 sen per 1,000 litres compared to RM0.24 sen per 1,000 litres before.
PBAPP general manager Jaseni Maidinsa said domestic water consumers would only be affected if they used more than 35,000 litres per month.
"Seventy-two per cent of the 460,966 domestic users will not be affected. Only 28% of high-volume domestic consumers would be affected.
"However, they can choose to reduce consumption to avoid WCS," he said in a statement Thursday.
Jaseni said if a household's bi-monthly water bill was RM21.40 or less per month, then they would not be affected by WCS.
He said the primary aim of WCS was to conserve water.
"Water conservation is the only way for PBAPP to sustain continuous good water supply and reasonable water tariffs.
"It may be the wet season now, but we need to ensure that we have enough water at all times especially during long dry seasons," he said.
