YAN: Umno’s Wanita and Youth wings, headed by their chiefs, are wooing voters door-to-door and during coffeeshop talks, claiming their campaign in the Sungai Limau by-election is yielding results.
Wanita chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said voters here, especially from the Chinese community, were placing high hopes on Mentri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir to bring development to the constituency.
“I can sense that many of them are supporting Barisan Nasional, especially the women, during our walkabouts.
“Previously, they did not have the opportunity to meet us. We are gaining ground here,” said Shahrizat, who is special adviser in the Prime Minister’s Department on issues of women professionals and entrepreneurs.
She was speaking to reporters after opening a Tekun programme for single mothers at Taman Mahsuri in Sungai Limau Dalam yesterday.
Tekun chairman Datuk Hamidah Osman said the entreprenuer funding agency gave out interest-free loans to single mothers for small businesses, adding that 17 million single mothers had benefitted since it was set up in 1998.
Loans of up to RM3.2mil have been given out to 322 entrepreneurs in Sungai Limau.
Umno Youth leader Khairy Jamaluddin said their low-key campaign in a PAS stronghold had shown positive results.
“Areas where Barisan could not enter before now have the party flag flying high,” he said, claiming that there were PAS supporters who had joined the Barisan campaign.
“The youths here hope to see development and economic opportunities. This can only be achieved if the elected representative comes from the same party as the state and federal governments,” he told newsmen after a visit to Bukit Besar and Permatang Buloh here.
He said Umno Youth’s small-scale campaign included ceramah, door-to-door visit and coffeeshop talks.
