GEORGE TOWN: Little India here was an extra hive of activity as Hindus made use of the last weekend before Deepavali to wrap up their festive shopping.
Among the hordes of shoppers was housewife M. Rajathi who was looking for sarees with her sister and friend.
“We prefer to do last-minute shopping as prices are usually lower then. Besides, we are always too busy,” quipped the 27-year-old.
Also there was C. Priya, 22, who came all the way from Alor Setar with her husband and mother.
“There are so much more choices here,” said the nurse who went all out to wrap up her shopping yesterday.
Engineer R. Sriraj began his Deepavali shopping a month ago but said that he still had to come in for the “nitty gritties”.
“I still need to get greeting cards and house decorations,” said the 35-year-old father of two.
There was a special reason why Asiyah Mohd Apandir came to Little India – wanting to share in the festive atmosphere with her friends R. Nithya Robini and K. Heama.
“They sometimes ask for my views on the designs of sarees. So it is also like a shopping session for all of us!” said Asiyah, who is from Johor. All three, aged 20, are nursing students here.
