SOME breast cancer survivors stuff their brassieres with cotton as they could not afford to buy breast prostheses or special bras.
Therefore, the setting aside of RM9mil for free breast prostheses and special bras for cancer patients was welcomed, said Sime Darby Medical Centre consultant breast surgeon Datuk Dr Yip Cheng Har.
The initiative will assist in offsetting the cost of purchasing the support material, which is estimated to cost about RM1,200, and will benefit more than 8,000 patients.
In the Budget, Najib also announced that the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry would receive an allocation of RM2.2bil to carry out its programmes.
Among the programmes include the setting up of the Women’s Innovation Academy, which would create programmes related to leadership, entrepreneurship and innovation.
Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO) executive director Ivy Josiah said the academy was a good move in principle.
