KOTA KINABALU: The body of Tung Wee Wie, one of two Malaysians abducted by Filipino gunmen has been sent back to Sandakan.
A DNA test confirmed that the highly decomposed body was that of 34-year-old Wee Wie, Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib said on Thursday.
He said a post mortem was conducted at the Duchess of Kent Hospital Sandakan after it was brought back late Tuesday by unidentified villagers from Southern Philippines.
It was learnt that some of the family members were at the Hospital during the post mortem and they are expected to claim the remains for proper funeral rites.
Wee Wei was abducted together with his cousin Tung Wei Jie, 26, from a plantation estate in Lahad Datu last November and taken to the Southern Philippines and kept hostage at the Island of Jolo there.
Wei Jie managed to escape his armed abductors nine months after the incident and returned to his hometown in Negeri Sembilan with the help of the Philippines authority.
Wei Jie had told the Philippines authorities that his cousin had died due to illness.
