YAN (Kedah): Leaders from the Barisan Nasional and PAS camps were courteous and cordial in the grounds of the Dewan Datok Madi here, where their respective candidates filed their nomination papers for the Nov 4 by-election.
Outside the perimeters, however, the temperatures were rising and many PAS supporters were heard chanting “doom for the Barisan”.
From the huge crowd which had gathered outside the hall, one person was heard campaigning for PAS through a loud hailer, which is an offence under election laws.
Kedah police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim said they have identified the suspect and also have video and photographic evidence.
“We did not arrest him on the spot to avoid creating an unpleasant situation in the presence of supporters,” he said,
“If convicted, the offender is liable to be fined up to RM2000 or jailed a year,” he said.
Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said 3,000 policemen had been deployed to maintain peace and order during the by-election. He called on all groups to abide by the law.
