PEKAN: Umno is putting itself on the forefront of change with the party’s new voting system, said its president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
He said the party was leading the charge and not following in the footsteps of other parties.
“Other political parties have a small number of delegates who can vote and even then they still have to hold re-elections. Whereas, our change is based on the democratic principle, which is inclusive and will breathe new life into the party,” said Najib at the opening of the Pekan Umno delegates’ meeting here yesterday.
He said this practice was important as the next general election would be even more challenging.
“Information spreads rapidly these days through social media and this presents a more challenging political landscape which we must adapt to.
“However, looking back at the 13th general election, Umno was actually successful in that we managed to clinch 88 seats in Parliament. Our colleagues did not perform that well but Umno remains the backbone of Barisan Nasional,” he said.
Najib said Umno now had to chart the next move by using the latest strategies to further strengthen the party.
“I believe we can do it if we maintain our principles and objectives but change our policies, strategies and approach and at the same time, hold on to the values of our struggle,” he said.
In Muar, party deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said Umno leaders picked under the new election system would face greater challenges ahead as they were chosen by the grassroots who were the pulse and heart of the party.
“I feel it is a better system (than before) as it has given an important message to those elected that they are bearing a heavier trust by the party,” Muhyiddin said when closing the Pagoh Umno division delegates’ meeting yesterday.
Muhyddin, who is the division chief, said the new system was “not only a mission to eliminate money politics but more importantly, to strengthen the party by empowering the grassroots”.
He said the new electoral process involved more than 145,000 eligible voters and was no longer in the hands of just around 2,800 at the previous party assembly.
