News portal backs down, apologises to Mukhriz

PETALING JAYA: Giving in to Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir's demands, a news portal which claimed he practised money politics has issued an apology around 10am Saturday.

Last Friday the news portal in question ran an article claiming that Mukhriz had sent out 1.2 million SMS for votes and handed out cash to secure the Umno vice-president position.

The news portal quoted an Umno Insider who said Mukhriz's machinery had gone all over the country since Friday morning to woo voters.

Mukhriz, who is also Kedah Mentri Besar, demanded the news portal withdraw the article or face legal action.

When asked if there was a mastermind behind the article, he said he was not sure but claimed the news portal was "well known for its agenda against the Government" and often took potshots at him.

In the apology, the news portal apologised and said it regretted any inconvenience caused to Mukhriz.

"It has been brought to our attention that the report is inaccurate. The offending articles have been removed."
