MARAN: Two foreign nationals have been charged in the magistrate's court with stealing money from an automated teller machine at a bank here.
Argentinian Carlos Alberto Gonzales, 55, and Peruvian Timoteo Bartolome, 31, were accused of cutting open the ATM at Bank Rakyat in Jalan Perpustakaan here between 3am and 5am on Oct 9.
No plea was recorded and bail was not offered. Magistrate Rini Triani Mohamad Ali set the case to be mentioned on Nov 20.
Insp Ridzwan Seman prosecuted while the two accused were not represented on Friday.
The two foreigners had been reported to have stolen RM174,000 by breaking open the ATM. Police were alerted to the theft and caught one of the suspects near the Maran toll plaza.
His accomplice had initially managed to escape into a nearby oil palm plantation. An assortment of welding tools and five steel boxes containing the stolen cash were found in the suspect's car.
