BALIK PULAU: Heavy rains that lasted for several hours since 7am Sunday left several low-lying areas in Bayan Lepas and Balik Pulau inundated by flash floods.

Among the worst-hit areas was Kampung Pulau Betong where villagers could be seen moving their belongings and valuables to higher grounds as their houses were submerged at least 0.5m in water.

Several roads such as Jalan Pulau Betong, Simpang Empat and Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah were also flooded as water reached knee-level.

It resulted in a bumper-to-bumper crawl as motorists and motorcyclists were reluctant to pass through the partially-submerged roads.

Penang Local Government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said floods were reported mostly in the south-west area.

Among the areas were Kampung Seronok in Bayan Lepas, Kampung Masjid Teluk Kumbar, Kampung Nelayan Teluk Bahang and Kampung Trang in Pulau Betong.

"So far, we have not received reports from other places.

"We have assigned special squads to clear rubbish and debris at pump houses, monsoon drains and retention ponds," he said when contacted.
