PETALING JAYA: An MCA leader has lambasted Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir for accusing the party of being racist.
MCA central committee member Loh Seng Kok (pix) dismissed Mukhriz’s allegations that the party was racist as “utterly false”.
“The MCA has always taken a wide-minded approach towards any issue and we have never issued racist statements in order to win over the Chinese at the expense of the other races.
“We have always dealt with issues in a logical manner regardless of whether it involves Malays, Indians or Chinese or any other race,” said Loh, who is also MCA publicity bureau deputy chairman, in a statement.
He was responding to a news report quoting Mukhriz who questioned whether MCA and Gerakan were trying to be “more racist than DAP” to woo Chinese votes.
Mukhriz, who is running for the Umno vice-president post in the coming party elections, also denied that the Kedah government practised a racist policy, saying that national schools need more help than Chinese schools.
Loh said it was regretful and shocking for Mukhriz to accuse MCA as racists simply because they disagreed with his statement that he will not help Chinese schools as the Chinese community did not vote for Barisan Nasional in the previous general polls.
He pointed out that the Chinese community had contributed much to the development and progress of the nation, just like any other community.
“It is essential that racial harmony be maintained as it is the main factor in allowing a country to grow, and it is unfortunate that some political leaders had decided to play up racial issues instead to win support,” he said.
Loh urged Mukhriz and other Umno leaders to stop playing up racist issues seeing that the Umno elections were just around the corner.
“If they want to win the support of their party members, they should do so based on their achievements in the party to prove that they are the better candidate,” he said.
Loh said MCA will not allow anyone to undermine or pawn the nation’s racial harmony for their own personal gains.
