Polls ready: Pulai Umno staff members preparing for the election, which will be held today.
PETALING JAYA: Incumbent Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has likened the battle for the wing’s number one post as the war of “results versus rhetoric”.
In his final appeal for support before polling today, Khairy, who is facing a four-cornered challenge, said the 70,000 delegates should choose a leadership line-up from among candidates who could ensure that Umno remained relevant.
“This is the choice facing delegates at the Umno Youth election nationwide. Although some challengers are trying to influence delegates with political rhetoric, I prefer to offer results which can help our race,” said Khairy yesterday.
His main contender Akhramsyah Sanusi is meanwhile confident that the desire for change at the grassroots level would see delegates voting in the agent for change.
He also called on the delegates to think wisely, saying that Umno Youth today has derailed from the struggle to uphold Islam and defend Malay rights.
Others who are in the running for the Umno Youth number one post are Abdul Karim Ali, Irwan Ambak and Syed Rosli Syed Harman Jamallulail.
Incumbent Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil meanwhile is satisfied with the wing’s preparedness in facing the election.
“There exists a healthy competition among candidates for all posts. This proves that we are now in a commendable stage,” she said.
Her challenger Datuk Maznah Mazlan also hoped that the election process would run smoothly.
“I have done my best and it is now up to the delegates to choose. I also hope that personal attacks against contenders in the election through social media and SMS will stop,” she said.
Another contender for the Wanita Umno chief post, Raihan Sulaiman, expressed hope the election would be done in a fair and transparent manner.
“I am hoping that this election will prove that contests will not cause disunity within the party, and that Umno members are mature enough to accept changes,” she said.
Puteri Umno chief hopeful Mas Ermieyati Samsudin is hoping the almost 50,000 Puteri delegates would consider her 12 years of unbroken track record as the wing’s chief for Malacca.
“The campaigning has been tiring, but I am also very excited. I am only hoping that the best person will win,” she said.
