Revolting sight: The deplorable conditions behind the shoplots at the Kubang Kerian township adjacent to the Universiti Sains Hospital in Kota Baru, Kelantan.
KOTA BARU: Rats scurry around the surgical tables of the Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital here leaving a strong stench of urine in the operation theatres, according to a medical officer.
The operation theatres are on the first floor of the 12-storey building of the campus which houses the Schools of Medical Sciences, Health Sciences and Dentistry.
The officer, who did not want to be named, said he had also seen rats and mice on beds and practically everywhere in the wards and been told that the pest problem had been there for many years “with the higher-ups just shrugging their shoulders”.
It was about time the media highlighted the rodent infestation and how serious it was, he said in reference to the reports in The Star yesterday.
“It endangers the health of patients, visitors, hospital staff and the rest of the campus citizens.”
“It is sometimes hard for us to do our jobs when we are worried that our food may get contaminated,” he said.
A final year medical student from Johor said she had also come across rats and mice within the hospital complex.
She had kept quiet about the problem for fear of repercussion from the management, she said, adding: “I have gotten used to seeing the rodents scurrying around although I still wonder why little has been done to get rid of them.”
