KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar has been asked to explain allegations of a Youth Council programme being used as a platform to campaign for party election.
His challenger for the Umno Youth chief post Syed Rosli Syed Harman Jamallulail claimed that Khairy had used his position as Youth and Sports Minister to rally support.
Syed Rosli claimed he had evidence to show that there was a session to introduce Umno Youth candidates vying for various positions in the wing during the council’s Ramah Mesra ceremony held at Kampung Pandan sports complex on Wednesday night.
“Programmes organised by the Youth Council should cater to a multi-racial crowd, regardless of gender.
“But at the function held in Kampung Pandan, the participants were all males and we have spotted quite a number of delegates who will be voting in the Umno Youth polls this Saturday,” he said at a press conference here yesterday.
He said the onus was on Khairy to explain if the event was funded by the Youth and Sports Ministry.
“I will submit all the evidence I have to the Umno disciplinary committee tomorrow,” he said.
Umno disciplinary board acting chairman Tan Sri Megat Najmuddin Megat Khas said they would investigate the claim if hard evidence could be produced.
In KUALA TERENGGANU, Khairy was quoted by Bernama as saying that the allegation showed Syed Rosli did not understand that Umno Youth could not be separated from the youths in general as most members of youth associations were also Umno Youth members.
“As the Youth and Sports Minister, I convene meetings with youth leaders on regular basis. Most of them are also Umno Youth members and delegates.
“This allegation is not true because I meet with those youth leaders, who coincidentally are Umno Youth members and delegates, to discuss current issues, which coincidentally revolve around the delegates. So, more or less, I did explain to them a few things related to the elections.”
