GEORGE TOWN: Police raided a luxury apartment in Bayan Baru here, believed to be used as a drug lab to process heroin.
However, two men, believed to be members of a syndicate, managed to escape when they spotted policemen moving in.
It is learnt that they were carrying two luggage bags during the incident at about 1am Saturday.
Police who conducted a raid at the unit at the seventh floor found 5kg of heroin, 50kg of caffeine, several packets of powder and chemicals believed to be the materials to produce the drugs.
Police said the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug trafficking which carries the mandatory death sentence.
On Sept 22, police also busted a drug lab at a shoplot in Jalan Thean Teik, Air Itam and uncovered various drugs namely 416gm of methamphetamine, 7.3kg of ecstasy powder and 6kg of ketamine powder, valued at RM1.24mil.
Police also found 12 bullets with the arrest of three men aged between 37 and 45 whom had since been charged in court.
