KUALA LUMPUR: Some two million websites in the country are offering "medicine for men" that is usually associated with better sexual performance.
Although it was not specified what the medicine for men meant, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam told Parliament that the websites were offering unregistered and dubious medication and this could result in dire health consequences.
"Our advice to Malaysian men is not to purchase such medication online as they can have dire consequences to their health especially if the medication is fake," he said when replying to a question by Liang Teck Meng (BN-Simpang Renggam) in Dewan Rakyat on Thursday.
He said that it was important for local men to be aware and understand what they are purchasing online with regard to the numerous male products.
"What is also important is for our local men to have self believe and confidence in themselves," he added.
Liang wanted to know what was being done by the government with regard to the numerous websites on medicine for men.
Liang said that a search on Google for medicine for men revealed 72mil websites worldwide with two million being from Malaysia.
Of this two million websites, he said that some 350,000 were in the Chinese language with 540,000 in Malay.
While it was possible to monitor local websites via the ministry's Pharmacy and Advertisement units and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, Subramaniam said that it was difficult to control advertisements hosted in foreign nations.
To tackle the issue, he said the ministry's officers responsible for monitoring advertisements would be trained to fight cyber crime related to online sale of unregistered and unverified medication.
Earlier, Subramaniam informed the Dewan that 163 websites were shut down by authorities following a joint operations with Interpol.
