Koong Swee Kwan being led away from the magistrate's court on Thursday.
He also faces second charge of attempting to murder, which caused injury to Cheong, 49, at the same time and place.
To this charge, Koong Swee Kwan was accused under section 307 of the same act, which provides a maximum of 20 years' jail on conviction.
No plea was recorded for the charges which were read in Bahasa Malaysia.
Koong was unrepresented.
On July 29, it was reported that Najadi was shot dead while his wife was seriously injured when they emerged from the Kuan Yin temple.
On Aug 16, the taxi driver Chew Siang Chee, 45, who allegedly ferried Koong, claimed trial in a Sessions Court to possessing a pistol and four live bullets.
