JOHOR BARU: Sixty-nine criminals on the police wanted list have been detained in the ongoing Ops Cantas Khas since the operation started on Aug 17.
State police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said the 69 were among 2,445 arrested.
He said that of those detained, 26 were involved in commercial crimes, 1,080 for drug-related offences and the remainder for crimes such as robbery and possession of dangerous weapons.
“Rapists were among the 69 criminals arrested. They have been on the run and playing hide-and-seek with the police for some time,” SDCP Mohd Mokhtar told reporters yesterday.
Of those nabbed, 1,394 were Malays, 445 and 301 were Chinese and Indians respectively while the rest were made up of other races.
SDCP Mohd Mokhtar criticised certain quarters who claimed that the police were only targeting Indians in the crackdown.
He said that since August, Johor police had conducted investigations and questioned 120,320 people, of which 56,085 were Malays, 32,898 Chinese, 22,510 Indians and the rest from other races.
“We are not targeting only one race. The police are colour blind and we arrest criminals based on investigations and proof,” he said, adding that 9,000 police personnel were involved in the crackdown.
SDCP Mohd Mokhtar said 68,834 vehicles were also inspected and the police had confiscated three vans, five lorries, 62 cars and 87 motorcycles.
On an unrelated issue, he said a 27-year-old unemployed man, believed to be a drug dealer, was arrested after the police raided a house in Taman Perling on Sept 26.
SDCP Mohd Mokhar said the police seized 4kg of heroin, valued at RM220,000, from the house and the suspect had been remanded to assist in investigations.
He said the police also arrested a 41-year-old unemployed man, believed to be a drug dealer, in Jalan Sultanah Aminah and confiscated drugs, a luxury watch, two cars and a semi-automatic gun from him.
