PETALING JAYA: DAP strategist Liew Chin Tong stormed his way to the top of the central executive committee (CEC) polls, following fresh elections that took a toll on the Lim family.
At last year’s CEC election, nullified by allegations of irregularities, he was placed 15th and many steps below party adviser Lim Kit Siang and secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.
The father-and-son powerhouse were placed at the top two slots of the elected list at the tainted CEC election last December.
The outcome of the fresh polls yesterday, however, saw the senior Lim dropping to second spot, while Guan Eng slid to fifth placing.
Perak cousins Nga Kor Meng and Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham scraped through the last two rungs at 19th and 20th spots respectively.
It’s status quo for Ngeh but Nga fell from the 12th spot, affirming earlier speculations that the Perak delegates came in full force to put the cousins in their place.
Liew, the Kluang MP said to be responsible for the DAP’s foray into Johor, was outstanding in his performance with 1,438 votes but, nevertheless, was ahead of Kit Siang by just two votes.
“I definitely did not expect to be at the top. But I would like to thank the delegates for their support,” said Liew.
DAP national chairman Karpal Singh and his son Gobind Singh Deo took commanding third and fourth placings.
While Karpal maintained his position and Gobind rose from eighth place, Karpal’s other son, Datuk Keramat assemblyman Jagjeet Singh Deo, withdrew from the race, saying he did not want to cause disunity in the party.
Besides Karpal, all party office bearers were re-appointed to their respective posts by the newly-elected CEC.
The committee also named 10 appointed members.
The CEC is the decision-making body of the party.
Bukit Bendera MP Zairil Khir Johari, who benefited from a so-called technical glitch to be placed in the CEC after a recount some three weeks after the Dec 15 polls last year, leapt straight into 12th place.
Zairil described the result as totally unexpected.
“I am happy to be officially back in the CEC,” he said.
The fresh polls saw several CEC members elected last year retaining their place in the party’s policy-making body.
Returning officer Dr Ong Kian Meng said of the total 1,725 ballots cast, 62 were spoilt.
Of the 68 candidates, 19 had withdrawn but received a total of 33,260 votes.
The following are the results of the polls held on Sunday at the One World Hotel here:
1. Liew Chin Tong - 1,438 (previously 14th)
2. Lim Kit Siang - 1,436 (1st)
