Hare-py with his business: Jefri holding a few of the over 100 rabbits he has at his farm in Kg Banggol Tok Jiring, Kuala Terengganu.
KUALA TERENGGANU: Jefri Abdullah was depressed when he lost his job as an insurance agent due to an illness five years ago.
But the animal lover found some consolation in keeping pets. He started to keep rabbits.
Little did the 40-year-old knew then that his “therapeutic escape” would become an income earner for him.
Today, the father-of-four has a thriving rabbit farm in Kg Banggol Tok Jiring here.
“About three years ago, my daughter persuaded me to keep rabbits as pets. So, we bought a pair but soon my daughter lost interest in them.
“I have always loved animals. I took care of the rabbits and even did research on their habits and diet. Then it occurred to me that I could try starting a rabbit business to earn some money as I had stopped working,” he said in an interview.
Starting out with five rabbits, his business expanded swiftly and today, he has over 100 rabbits in his farm.
He would get orders from as far as Johor. A pair of rabbits can fetch as high as RM500, depending on their breed.
Jefri set up a Facebook page for his business and also joined the social network’s communities of other rabbit suppliers to spread his networking.
He found that the demand for rabbits was getting higher, especially in Terengganu, as people sought alternatives to cats and dogs.
“One of the advantages of keeping rabbits as pets is that their food is cheaper.
“When I first started out, I faced plenty of objections from friends and even family members. They told me this would not earn me anything.
“But today, I have proven them wrong. Although the business did not make me rich, I have earned enough to feed my family.”
He now wants to venture into rabbit meat business.
