IPOH: A total of 21 out of the 24 MCA divisions in Perak are urging party president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek to defend his seat in the party elections.
That means about 87% of the divisions hoped that Dr Chua, who is also Perak MCA chairman, would contest for the presidential post in the party’s main elections on Dec 21.
The divisions are Ipoh Barat, Ipoh Timur, Lumut, Kampar, Tapah, Tanjung Malim, Gopeng, Sungai Siput, Kuala Kangsar, Padang Rengas, Larut, Taiping, Beruas, Tambun, Parit, Bagan Datoh, Parit Buntar and Gerik, Bukit Gantang, Pasir Salak and Batu Gajah.
State MCA secretary Datuk Tan Chin Meng, who read out a joint statement, said they wanted Dr Chua to continue leading the party.
“We believe that the party would continue to strengthen under his leadership,” he said at a press conference yesterday.
Tan said Dr Chua should not be the only one to be taken to task for the party’s poor performance in the May 5 general election.
“In fact, deputy president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai should also shoulder part of the responsibility as he was the elections preparation committee chairman,” he pointed out.
In 2008, MCA won 15 parliamentary and 31 state seats out of the 40 parliamentary and 90 state seats it contested.
However, the party only won seven parliamentary and 11 state seats this year.
Tan, who is also MCA national organising secretary, said he hoped Liow’s supporters would stop making defamatory statements to tarnish Dr Chua’s reputation.
“We must bear in mind that we must elect leaders who have the capability to put the party on the right track.”
