TAWAU: The Defence Ministry will carry out an overall review of the national defence structure so that external and internal threats can be tackled simultaneously.
In this regard, a marine team would be formed in Sabah and provided with amphibious capability to control coastal waters as soon as possible.
"For me, the question of national security cannot be compromised because if security is breached as what happened in (Sulu intrusion) Lahad Datu, it will affect other sectors such as farming, tourism, production, education and others," he told reporters after attending an Umno division political bureau meeting here.
Hishammuddin said that various security initiatives planned under the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) should be implemented as soon as possible to strengthen sea borders.
Among them are the restructuring of the armed forces division and brigade as well as General Operations Force (GOF)
and getting more people involved in security.
Hishammuddin urged people public living in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZONE) area to join the army volunteer and reserve units as they could help in providing intelligence information directly to the security units in the area.
