GEORGE TOWN: A Japanese man has been charged in the magistrate’s court here with possessing 2gm of cannabis.
Miura Yohei, 32, was charged yesterday under Section 6 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a maximum jail term of five years, a maximum fine of RM20,000 or both upon conviction.
He is alleged to have committed the offence beside Muntri Street, near the Merchant Hotel in Penang Road at about 4.30pm on Sept 25.
Yohei was also charged with administering himself with a drug at the state contingent police headquarters’ narcotics crime investigation department office at about 6pm the same day.
The second offence carries a maximum jail sentence of two years or a maximum fine of RM5,000.
In court earlier, a man believed to be a friend of Yohei was seen handing him two comic books.
The man was overheard telling Yohei to read the books so that he “will not be bored in the lock-up”.
This happened just before Yohei was led away by the police.
Magistrate Umma Devi Loganathan set Oct 25 for mention of the case and for a Japanese interpreter to be present as Yohei could not understand English and Bahasa Malaysia.
