IPOH: Two night market traders here received death threats and were beaten up by a group of men operating within the vicinity.
A mobile phone accessories trader, who only wanted to be known as Liew, said she and her boyfriend were severely beaten by three men at Medan Ipoh night market here at about 10pm on Tuesday.
Liew said the three men, one in his 50s and the other two in their 20s, were from the vicinity of the night market.
“They attacked us with a foldable chair, wooden and metal sticks for about seven minutes.
“They stopped when a few passers-by walked up to them and pulled them aside.
“At that time, we were drenched in blood and could hardly move,” she told reporters at PKR Gopeng office here yesterday.
Liew, 26, said a few passers-by took them to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital for treatment.
“My boyfriend had five stitches on his head, while I also had five stitches on my head,” she said, adding that there were bruises all over their backs, arms and thighs.
Foo, Liew’s 29-year-old boyfriend, said the three men also threatened to harm them if they were to report the matter to the police.
“We learned from third parties that the three men ‘would make sure that we die’ if the incident is made known to the public.”
Teja assemblyman Chang Lih Kang said the couple had been living in fear ever since the incident happened.
“We hope the police can get to the bottom of this case and end this criminal intimidation,” he said.
Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Sum Chang Keong said police have detained two suspects related to the case.
He said the suspects, aged 28 and 32, were being remanded until Wednesday to assist in investigations.
“We do not rule out that there are elements of extortion in the case,” he said.
