Luyang rep Hiew resigns from DAP to be independent

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah DAP’s Luyang assemblyman Hiew King Cheu has quit the party following his abrupt resignation as adviser to the state liaison committee weeks ago.

However, Hiew said he would not be joining any Barisan Nasional component party but will remain as an independent member in the state assembly.

"I have decided to leave and become an independent member of the state assembly," he told The Star Online when contacted Friday.

Hiew said he would e-mail the resignation letter as a party member to the party headquarters later today.

Signs of discontent among the ranks of Sabah DAP went public when on Aug 12, Hiew announced his resignation as the state adviser after four of his colleagues called for disciplinary action to be taken against him for supporting Klias assemblyman Datuk Lajim Ukin as Sabah Opposition leader. The party’s choice had been Tamparuli assemblyman Datuk Wilfred Bumburing.

Since submitting his resignation letter as adviser, Hiew was widely seen as planning an exit from the party which made its best showing by winning four state assembly seats and two parliament seats in the May 5, 2013 general election.
