KUALA TERENGGANU: The Public Awareness for Organ Donation Action Committee revealed that there are 16,978 critically-ill patients in the country in need of organ donors to continue living.
Its chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said as at Aug 31, there were 16,945 kidney and 17 liver patients awaiting organ donation.
He said at present, the committee had listed 235,573 people pledging their organs but they were not adequate to meet the demand.
“Since 1976 to August this year, only 432 people had donated their organs after undergoing matching procedures,” he said.
Lee revealed that at the moment, the country was desperately in need of donors for kidneys.
“For organ donation after death, the rate of organ and tissue donation in the country is just 0.6 donation for every million of the population,” he told reporters after launching the first series of an organ donation tour here yesterday. — Bernama
