MALACCA: Fresh from staking a claim as being the originator of the asam pedas, Malacca is now trying to patent a homemade asam boi (sour plum) drink as its own.
According to businessman Ric Tay, the concoction was created by his father, Robert, at Klebang in 1980.
Ric, 40, said he had been helping his father blend the juice since he was seven years old.
Robert’s concoction is popular even as far as Singapore, where Ric claims that the drink is mentioned in many food blogs.
According to Ric, who just took over his father’s business, the juice is different from the ones available in the market as his family recipe of blending the drink differs and imparts properties that can aid digestion when consumed frequently.
“It’s purely home-made and doesn’t contain any preservatives. There is minimal use of sugar.
“I am making a trip to the Patent Registration Office of the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia to patent the asam boi juice as originating from Klebang,” he said when interviewed recently.
Ric added that it was not easy to produce the juice “Klebang-style” as only citrus fruits of a certain quality were selected to make the juice.
Ric’s father started peddling the juice, apart from nasi lemak and cencaru, at an abandoned squash complex in Klebang 33 years ago.
He retired recently due to poor health.
“Dad is 65 years old and decided to call it a day and I am taking over his legacy as the eldest son.”
In June, the state government announced that it intended to patent the popular asam pedas, but Johor protested against the move.
However, Malacca maintained that the asam pedas served there was different from that in Johor.
Ric said he planned to pack the juice in plastic cups and market it throughout the country, using a logo that features a picture of his father donning his trademark headgear.
“I will be very aggressive in promoting the juice once I have patented it and also obtained the halal certification for it.”
