PETALING JAYA: A group of 30 people bid farewell to the five-year-old girl who died in a suicide attempt by her parents at her funeral at the Petaling Jaya City Council crematorium.
Among the mourners were her parents, who had been detained by the police, seven-year-old brother, relatives and friends.
The parents, whose remand order expires tomorrow, arrived at the crematorium at 2.40pm yesterday under police escort and were led handcuffed to the casket.
Although the father seemed calm, the mother looked teary-eyed. Both were taken away in a police vehicle at about 3.30pm after the funeral.
Reporters who were waiting outside the lobby area of the crematorium were then told by an unidentified relative that none of them would accept interviews and asked to “let them mourn”.
It was earlier reported that a family suicide attempt had turned into a homicide case against the couple after one of their two children died.
The man is a contractor who has been without a job for almost a month and police said that he had debts with several banks.
He and his wife were arrested on Wednesday.
They first attempted suicide on Sept 11 by burning charcoal in the master bedroom before they went to bed in their second floor apartment at Sri Manja Square, Taman Sri Sentosa, off Old Klang Road here.
When the suicide attempt failed, they tried again the next day. This time, their daughter died.
They kept the body in the apartment until it was discovered on Thursday morning after the girl’s kindergarten teacher asked a classmate’s mother to check on the girl, who had been absent for more than five days.
Family members claimed the girl’s body at the University Malaya Medical Centre mortuary on Friday night.
