KUALA LUMPUR: When Mohd Hanafiah Ali’s grandson wanted to follow him to the Armed Forces Day parade, the army veteran had the perfect idea of what they should wear.
“We were at another parade in the Sungai Besi camp on Wednesday and Hazriq remarked that he had a suit just like mine. So, I thought it would be a good idea for us to wear matching suits today,” said Mohd Hanafiah when met after the parade at Dataran Merdeka yesterday.
Mohd Hanafiah, 66, earlier marched in the veterans’ contingent in a suit decorated with his medals while Hazriq, six, watched proudly from the grandstand, with miniature versions of his grandfather’s medals pinned onto his suit.
A former major in the Royal Malay Regiment, Mohd Hanafiah was impressed with the sophisticated military equipment showcased and a tactical demonstration featuring the armed forces’ combined Rapid Response Team which was the highlight of the parade.
The inaugural parade was held in conjunction with the 80th Armed Forces Day, which is celebrated annually on Sept 16.
Besides 5,442 officers and men marching, the parade also saw a team of 25 skydivers parachuting onto Dataran Merdeka, an aerial display by Air Force fighter jets as well as a display of military equipment rarely seen by the public.
The army also unveiled its new digital camouflage fatigues during the parade.
The parade kicked off at 8am, with the arrival of the air force, army, navy and armed forces chiefs in Ferret fighting vehicles.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Deputy Defence Minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri arrived next in a Condor armoured vehicle while Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak arrived last, with Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein aboard the new AV-8 armoured vehicle.
Later, Hishammuddin said the parade was held on such a major scale to show strength.
“After our security and sovereignty was threatened, we want the people to be confident in our abilities,” he said.
