PETALING JAYA: The contractor who has been detained for the homicide of his daughter following the family suicide attempt has debts with several banks.
Police said they were now looking into the possibility that the bank debts could have driven the contractor and his wife to the suicide attempt that turned into a homicide case against the couple when one of their two children died.
Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Arjunaidi Mohamed said initial investigations revealed that the parents were facing financial difficulties.
“The girl’s father had several bank debts but we are still investigating,” he said yesterday.
He also ruled out the possibility that the planned suicide was related to loan sharks.
“The parents were under extreme pressure prior to the failed suicide attempt.
“We are tracking down the bank records to discover the depth of their financial difficulties,” he said.
He added that the body of the little girl had not been claimed by the family as police were still waiting for a report from the chemist.
“The aunt tried to claim the body on Thursday but we expect the report to be ready within two days,” he said.
It was reported that the man, in his 50s, and his wife, in her 40s, would be under remand for six days until Sept 24.
He added that the body of the little girl was brought to the University Malaya Medical Centre and police were waiting for the post-mortem results.
ACP Arjunaidi also ruled out the possibility that the parents might have been involved in cult beliefs and refuted claims that the parents had criminal records.
The contractor had been without a job for almost a month.
He and his wife were arrested on Wednesday.
They first attempted suicide on Sept 11, by burning charcoal in the master bedroom before they went to bed in their second floor apartment at Sri Manja Square, Taman Sri Sentosa, off Old Klang Road here.
When the suicide attempt failed, they tried again the next day.
This time, their daughter died.
