PUTRAJAYA: The Government will not budge from its stand barring the remains of Communist Party of Malaya (CPM) leader Chin Peng from being brought to Malaysia, says Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
The Prime Minister said those who insist that the communist leader’s body should be brought here could file a suit in the courts to challenge the decision.
He said the people should understand that Chin Peng and his CPM comrades were responsible for the deaths of thousands of people during the Emergency.
Najib also said the Government would not stop anyone going to pay their last respects to Chin Peng.
The 89-year-old communist leader, who died at a hospital in Bangkok on Monday morning, will be cremated according to Buddhist rites at Bangkok’s Wat That Thong temple next week.
Umno Youth leader Khairy Jamaluddin said allowing Chin Peng’s body to be brought home would only hurt the feelings of family members of those who were killed by communist insurgents during the Emergency.
“Many ex-servicemen and policemen who survived the ordeal will certainly be the most hurt if Chin Peng’s remains are allowed to be brought back,” he said after launching an online youth organisation registration system (eRoy) here yesterday.
The Malaysian Council of Former Elected Representatives (Mubarak) also strongly supported the Government’s decision not to allow Chin Peng’s body to be brought back.
Mubarak information chief Datuk Abdul Rahman Sulaiman said he hoped the Government would stand firm on the decision.
He said Mubarak abhorred any suggestion to bring home Chin Peng’s ashes as he was not a hero to be glorified.
In Kota Kinabalu, a police report was lodged by the Sabah branch of the Malaysian Ex-Servicemen Association, who called for the Government to stand firm on the matter.
The report was lodged at the Karamunsing police station yesterday by the association’s state deputy president Mohd Rakim Abdullah.
Mohd Rakim labelled Chin Peng as a terrorist who had caused many deaths and much suffering among the country’s ex-servicemen.
